Clinical and Laboratory evaluation of measleslike rash in children and young adults BJM
Stewien,Klaus Eberhard; Lima,Lourdes Rehder de Andrade Vaz de; Botosso,Viviane Fongaro; Oliveira,Maria Isabel de; Fagundes,Simone N.; Nogueira,Meri B.; Ragazzi,Selma Lopes Betta; Costa,Maria Tereza Zuluni da; Ejzenberg,Bernardo; Durigon,Edison Luiz.
A clinical and laboratory evaluation of 11 children and young adults with measleslike rash was done during the measles outbreak in the Greater São Paulo Metropolitan area at the end of 1996 and spread over the country during 1997. Measles was laboratory confirmed in 07 patients by specific IgM detection in acute serum specimens using an IgM-capture EIA, by specific IgG seroconversion in serum pairs, and by reverse transcription PCR and virus isolation in peripheral blood lymphocytes. Clinical presentations were not always classic; one of the 07 cases had received measles vaccine and corresponded to modified clinical case of measles. The 4 remaining cases were negative for measles and were diagnosed as exanthem subitum (2 cases), scarlet fever and Kawasaki...

Humoral immune response to measles and varicella vaccination in former very low birth weight preterm infants BJID
Ferreira,Carolina Schlindwein Mariano; Perin,Maria Cristina Abrão Aued; Moraes-Pinto,Maria Isabel de; Simão-Gurge,Raquel Maria; Goulart,Ana Lucia; Weckx,Lily Yin; dos Santos,Amélia Miyashiro Nunes.
ABSTRACT Introduction: Immune response to vaccination in infants born prematurely may be lower than in infants born at full-term. Some clinical factors might be associated with humoral immune response. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to compare the immune response to measles and varicella vaccination in infants born prematurely with those born at full-term and to analyze factors associated with measles and varicella antibody levels. Methods: Prospective study including two groups of infants aged 12 months. One group of infants born prematurely with birth-weight <1500 g and who were in follow-up at the outpatient clinic for preterm infants at the institution and other group of infants born at full-term. Infants with malformations,...

Measles in children with HIV infection: report of five cases BJID
Carvalho,Vânia de; Marinoni,Leide Parolin; Martins,Luzilma Flenick; Taniguchi,Kerstin; Cruz,Cristina Rodrigues da; Bertogna,Jeanine; Fillus Neto,José.
Patients with AIDS have a high incidence of skin problems due to the immunosuppression and malnourishment that are inherent to the progression of this disease. Clinical manifestation of these skin lesions and their severity are different in AIDS patients. We made a prospective study of five cases of measles in children with HIV infection during a community outbreak, and there were typical as well as atypical forms of the disease, including one case with negative serology. There were pulmonary complications, but none of the patients died. The anti-retroviral treatment may have contributed to the decrease in measles morbidity in these pediatric AIDS patients.

Measles serodiagnosis: production and evaluation of the IgM-measles ELISA IAL reagent BJM
Hoshino-Shimizu,Sumie; Vaz-de-Lima,Lourdes Rehder de Andrade; Oliveira,Maria Isabel de; Pereira,Carlos Augusto; Moura,Anísio de; Mendonça,Ronaldo Zucatelli.
Recent measles outbreaks in different countries led to an increase of laboratory measles diagnosis. Thus, we developed the IgM-Measles ELISA IAL, using measles virus antigens obtained from cell cultured in microcarriers in order to supply reagent kits to Brazilian public health laboratories. A batch of antigenic reagent was produced and evaluated in the enzyme immunoassay in comparison with clinical diagnosis and with as reference assay (IgM Capture ELISA CDC) data. This study was performed in a positive panel with 70 serum samples from patients with measles, and a negative panel with 132 samples from patients with unrelated diseases and without recent measles or vaccination history. In relation to other diagnostic methods, the IgM ELISA IAL presented...

The re-emergency and persistence of vaccine preventable diseases Anais da ABC (AABC)
BORBA,RODRIGO C.N.; VIDAL,VINÍCIUS M.; MOREIRA,LILIAN O..
The introduction of vaccination worldwide dramatically reduced the incidence of pathogenic bacterial and viral diseases. Despite the highly successful vaccination strategies, the number of cases among vaccine preventable diseases has increased in the last decade and several of those diseases are still endemic in different countries. Here we discuss some epidemiological aspects and possible arguments that may explain why ancient diseases such as, measles, polio, pertussis, diphtheria and tuberculosis are still with us.
